Wakayk formed in Recife in 2015 with members Jonilson, Wedercley, Marquynhos, and Nilton. Their sound pulls from funk, arrocha, and forró, and in 2017 they put out 'A Mais Gata!', which caught on quickly across Brazil. The track's upbeat rhythm and playful lyrics made it a staple at parties and on radio.
Around 2019, the band dealt with some online criticism over claims they'd borrowed from a Peruvian song. They denied it and kept working. Other songs like 'Me Dá Um Minuto!' and 'Agora o Céu Desabou!' followed a similar energetic, danceable template.
They've put out a handful of singles since, including 'Deixa Ela Dançar' in 2018 and 'Vem Sem Medo' in 2020. Their live shows are known for being high-energy, built around those percussive grooves and Jonilson's frontman presence.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
