Walkyria Mendes grew up in Campina Grande, a city known for forró music. She started singing in a church choir as a child, which is where she first developed her voice. In 2006, she released her debut album 'Nordeste Imenso,' and its title track 'Aquarela Nordestina' became one of her most recognizable songs.
Her music draws from the traditional rhythms of her northeastern Brazilian roots, but she's also known for incorporating classical elements into her arrangements. This blend shows up in songs like 'Sanfoneiro Pé de Serra' and 'Divergências.' She recorded several albums that explored this mix, including 'Forró & Clássico' in 2008 and 'Concerto Nordestino' in 2010.
Walkyria worked with musicians like guitarist Marcelo Café and accordionist Josias Sobrinho. Her catalog includes straightforward forró tracks like 'Boiadeiro' alongside more expansive pieces that reflect her interest in classical forms. She kept recording through the 2010s, putting out 'Nordeste Místico' in 2016.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
