Wall of Sleep formed in 1990 in Los Angeles with guitarist Steve Von Till and bassist Matt Pike. Their debut album 'Barren' came out in 1994, followed by three more full-length records over the next couple decades: 'Sleepwell Beast' in 1996, 'Aetheric Tomb' in 2002, and 'The Wake of Karin' in 2017.
They worked with a fairly steady lineup that included Sanford Parker on drums and Justin Marler playing live guitar. Songs like 'I Sleep' and 'Soil' show their approach to doom metal, slow tempos, heavy riffs, and vocals that lean toward the haunted side of things.
Their lyrics often circled around darker themes, which sometimes drew criticism, but they kept at it without much compromise. They didn't release a huge amount of material, but what they put out stayed consistent in tone and weight.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
