Archive material and source history
Walter Becker was born in Queens, New York in 1950. He met Donald Fagen in 1967, and together they formed Steely Dan in 1972. Their debut album 'Can't Buy a Thrill' came out that same year, and they went on to release ten studio albums together through 2003.
As half of Steely Dan, Becker helped shape a sound built on intricate harmonies and polished production. The band's work included songs like 'Reelin' In the Years,' 'Aja,' and 'Deacon Blues.' They often worked with a rotating group of musicians, including Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter, Jim Hodder, and Steve Gadd.
After Steely Dan, Becker released solo material with songs like 'Darkling Down,' 'Circus Money,' and 'Hat Too Flat.' He died in 2017 at age 67.
