Z' is in de haven geboren,haar vader was visser op zee.
Haar moeder bezweek aan tering,
zij scharreld in een café.
Haar vader nam dienst in het leger
maar kwam uit de oorlog niet weer.
Zo moest zij gaan werken in 't weeshuis
en daarna als meid bij een heer.
Zie je haar tranen, voel je haar smerte?
Hoor je het snikken, diep in haar herte?
Want in dit leven staat zij alleen,
zo eenzaam als zij, zo is er geen een.
Toen kreeg zij meer slagen dan eten,
haar werk was onnoemelijk zwaar.
Hij maakte haar zwanger en moeder
van een kind op haar veertiende jaar.
Het stierf na een maand van de koude,
sloeg zij meteen op de vlucht,
en ontmoette een man in de haven
vergeef mij wanneer ik nu zucht.
Zij trèwen op 't eind van de winter
en woonden heel klein op een boot.
Maar hij liet haar staan mee n'en baby
en ook nog een kind in haar schoot.
Hij was als matroos op een cargo
soms maanden op zee en van huis
en kwam hij terug van een zeereis
dan bleef hij maar twee dagen thuis.
Nu wacht zij al jaren, en twijfelt
of hij nog terugkomt of niet.
Is hij soms verdronken of leeft hij
in een heel verre stad mee een griet.
Zij staat elke dag in de haven
en kijkt naar de golvende zee.
Heur kind is geduldig en brave
en het zingt ook al stilletjes mee.
