Wama's formed in 1975 when four friends, Jan van der Meulen, Theo de Jong, Ronald van den Berg, and Leo de Jong, started playing together. Their name came from the first letters of their first names. They began with Dutch folk music but moved toward a more straightforward pop sound.
In 1979, they released their self-titled album 'Wama,' and the single 'Met De School Fijn Een Dagje Naar Buiten' became a hit in the Netherlands. The song stayed at the top of the charts for eight weeks. Its simple melody and lyrics about a school day out connected with listeners, especially children and families.
They kept making albums through the 1980s, including 'De School' in 1980 and 'Carnaval' in 1981. Another song, 'Ping En Pong Spelen Ping-Pong,' also became familiar to Dutch audiences. In the early 1980s, there was a plagiarism dispute over one of their songs, which they settled out of court.
Wama's music stayed in the Dutch pop landscape for years, and in 2019, the original members reunited for an anniversary show.
