Background notes

Archive material and source history

Wappa-Hoo formed in Salvador in the mid-1990s with Silvana Salazar on vocals, Jerry Marques on guitar, Gilberto Monte on bass, and Clovis Pinheiro on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1996, and the track "O Que Você Quer Ser?" became something of an anthem for young listeners at the time.

They released five studio albums between 1996 and 2005, including "O Que Você Quer Ser?" in 1998 and "Terceira Dimensão" in 2001. Their sound mixed pop and rock with Brazilian rhythms, which sometimes put them at odds with prevailing trends. Some of their lyrics, like those in "Beije-me," drew criticism for being too forward.

By the mid-2000s, their popularity had faded as new styles took over. But "O Que Você Quer Ser?" stuck around in the culture, remembered for its message about self-discovery.
