Warpaint

Warpaint formed in Los Angeles in 2004 as a quartet with Emily Kokal on vocals and guitar, Theresa Wayman on vocals and bass, Jenny Lee Lindberg on vocals and bass, and Stella Mozgawa on drums. Their sound developed around layered vocals and atmospheric arrangements, heard on early tracks like "Whiteout" and "Billie Holiday."

They released their debut album Exquisite Corpse in 2008, followed by The Fool in 2010 and Heads Up in 2014. After an eight-year gap, they returned with Radiate Like This in 2022, which included songs such as "Champion" and "So Good." Their music often features multiple vocalists and shifting rhythms rather than sticking to conventional rock structures.

In 2011, Wayman was diagnosed with breast cancer, which paused the band's touring plans. They supported her through treatment and recovery before resuming work. Warpaint has also spoken about gender issues in the music industry, though they've largely avoided framing their music through that lens.

Their recordings show a preference for studio experimentation over live urgency, with albums building on subtle textural details. Songs like "Keep It Healthy" and "Above Control" reflect this approach, where the atmosphere matters as much as the melody.
