Editor's note

Warrel Dane's dark progressive metal journey

The Sanctuary frontman and solo artist who shaped a corner of heavy music.

For the early sound, try 'Refuge Denied.' For the solo mood, 'Ethereal Blessing' or 'This Old Man' give you the picture.

Dane's voice defined Sanctuary's early sound on albums like 'Refuge Denied' and 'Into the Mirror Black.' His solo work, including songs like 'Ethereal Blessing,' showed a different side, more personal, sometimes bleak. He kept making music right up through Sanctuary's 2014 reunion album 'The Year the Sun Died.'

He co-founded Sanctuary in 1985 and they released two albums before the band went quiet. Dane returned with solo records in the late 2000s, then brought Sanctuary back together in 2010 for one more album. He died in 2017, leaving behind those two distinct phases of work.
