Archive material and source history
Warsaw formed in Manchester in 1977 with Ian Curtis on vocals, Bernard Sumner on guitar, Peter Hook on bass, and Stephen Morris on drums. They were part of that city's late-1970s punk scene, playing shows that were known for being intense. The band recorded songs like 'At A Later Date' and 'You're No Good For Me' during this period.
In 1979, they changed their name to Joy Division after a copyright dispute with another band called Warsaw. The new name came from the prostitution wing of a Nazi concentration camp. With the name change came a shift toward a darker, more atmospheric sound that would define their next phase.
They released their first album as Joy Division, 'Unknown Pleasures,' in 1979. Curtis's epilepsy affected their live performances, and the band's lyrics often dealt with bleak themes. They were working on their second album when Curtis died by suicide in 1980, just before its release.
