Archive material and source history

Washboard Sam was born Robert Brown in Dallas, Texas in 1910. He got his stage name from playing the washboard as his main instrument, using its corrugated surface for rhythm behind his vocals. In 1935, producer Lester Melrose heard him and arranged his first recordings for Decca. One of those early tracks was 'I'm Feeling Low Dow,' which became one of his signature songs.

His recordings from that period include 'Ain't That A Shame,' 'Bucket's Got a Hole In It,' and 'Down South Woman Blues.' The sound was straightforward blues with that washboard rhythm driving things along. He worked with other Chicago blues musicians of the time, including Big Bill Broonzy.

Sam recorded steadily through the 1930s and 1940s, putting out numerous singles. He died in 1966. Decades later, he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1983.
