Editor's note

Waxwing's quiet, melodic Pacific Northwest indie

A Portland band whose gentle, reflective songs found their listeners across a handful of albums.

For that classic Waxwing mood, 'One Days Evening' captures their early gentle sound perfectly. 'Records' from their later period shows how they maintained that atmosphere right through.

Waxwing's music has that specific Pacific Northwest indie sound, quiet, melodic, and atmospheric. Songs like 'One Days Evening' and 'Blue Days & Green Nights' from their debut 'The Great Wide Open' established that gentle, reflective quality. Later tracks like 'Records' and 'Cemetaries' maintained that somber feel, creating a consistent mood across their work.

They formed in Portland in 2009 around Shea Cole and Sam Cook-Parrott, releasing 'The Great Wide Open' that same year. After Cole's health issues and passing in 2015, Cook-Parrott kept the band going with albums like 'Island' and 'Bathed in Light' with help from other musicians. Their sound stayed atmospheric throughout, from early songs to later tracks like 'Kill The Messenger' and 'Schoolmaker'.

Waxwing formed in Portland in 2009 around Shea Cole and Sam Cook-Parrott. Their debut album 'The Great Wide Open' got some attention for its quiet, melodic approach. Songs like 'One Days Evening' and 'Blue Days & Green Nights' had a gentle, reflective quality that felt specific to that Pacific Northwest indie sound.

In 2012 they put out 'All Of My Prophets,' which included the track 'G.' That album seemed to connect with people in a different way, though some listeners found its tone a bit heavy. Around 2014, Cole was dealing with health issues, and the band released an EP called 'Always' during that period. Cole passed away the following year.

Cook-Parrott kept the name going for a while, putting out 'Island' and 'Bathed in Light' with help from drummer John Askew and keyboardist Drew Phillips. Tracks like 'Records' and 'Cemetaries' from those later records maintained that atmospheric, slightly somber feel they'd established early on. They never really broke through to a huge audience, but their music found its listeners.
