Archive material and source history
Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders formed in Manchester in 1963 with Wayne Fontana on vocals, Eric Stewart on guitar, Bobby Thompson on bass, and Rick Rothwell on drums. Their debut single "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um" became a hit in both the UK and US, establishing them quickly in the mid-1960s pop scene.
They followed that success with "The Game of Love" in 1965. The band's lineup shifted over the next few years, with Stewart leaving in 1965 and Fontana departing in 1968 to pursue solo work. The remaining members continued as The Mindbenders until 1972.
After the band, Eric Stewart found greater recognition with the Electric Light Orchestra. Wayne Fontana released solo singles like "Pamela, Pamela" in 1969.
