Wayne Hancock

Wayne Hancock came out of Lubbock, Texas, with a voice that sounds like it's been on the road for years. He writes songs about that road, like '87 Southbound,' which became something of an anthem for people who feel that restlessness. His style leans hard into traditional country, drawing from Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, but it's all filtered through his own raw delivery.

In the mid-1990s, he put out 'Thunderstorms and Neon Signs,' an album that helped define his sound. He's kept at it since, with records like 'Jukebox of Memories' and 'Those Honky Tonk Words.' He's worked with people like Ray Benson from Asleep at the Wheel, but the music stays pretty firmly in his own lane, straight-ahead honky-tonk and Western swing tunes like 'A-Town Blues' and 'Cow Cow Boogie.'

He tours with a band called The Honky Tonk Wranglers, playing live shows that are known for being energetic and direct. The songs don't shy away from darker themes or personal struggles, but they're delivered without much polish, which is part of the point.
