Archive material and source history
Western Flyer formed in Indianapolis in 1969, with Chris Hillman from The Byrds on vocals and guitar, joined by bassist John York, guitarist Bernie Leadon, and drummer Michael Clarke. They signed with Capitol Records in 1971 and put out their self-titled debut the following year. That album included 'Back In America,' a ballad that got some radio play and became one of their better-known songs.
Their second album, 'Livin' on the Edge,' came out in 1973. Bernie Leadon left in 1975 to join The Eagles, and York and Clarke departed not long after. Hillman kept the name going with different musicians for a few more records, like 'Who are You Today' in 1975 and 'Georgia Soft' in 1976, but the band's earlier momentum had faded.
