W.G. Tay formed in London in the early 2000s with William George Tay on vocals, Dave Webley on guitar, Matt Evans on bass, and Ryan Munroe on drums. They worked out their sound in small rehearsal spaces before releasing their debut single "Joga Horse" in 2009.
That single mixed dancehall rhythms with Bollywood influences and Tay's rough vocals, gaining attention quickly. Some critics questioned their approach to blending styles, but the band kept working. They put out their first album "Beyond the Beat" in 2010, followed by "Kaleidoscope" in 2012 and "The Disruption Zone" in 2015.
Their recordings incorporated elements of hip-hop, reggae, and Eastern music alongside the core dancehall feel. Tay handled most of the writing and vocals, with Webley's guitar work adding melodic texture over Evans and Munroe's rhythm section.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
