Archive material and source history
Whiskeytown formed in 1994 after Ryan Adams' previous band Patty Duke Syndrome ended. The group included Adams on vocals and guitar, Caitlin Cary on bass, Phil Wandscher on drums, and Chris Masterson on pedal steel. Their first album, 'Faithless Street,' came out in 1995 and got attention for its raw sound and lyrics. Songs like '16 Days' captured a particular mood of longing that connected with listeners.
The band released 'Strangers Almanac' in 1997, but internal tensions grew. Adams had personal struggles, and creative differences emerged, especially between Adams and Cary. Cary left Whiskeytown in 1999. The group continued and put out 'Pneumonia' in 2001, their final album.
Whiskeytown disbanded in 2002. Adams went on to a solo career, while other members pursued their own music. In 2019, multiple women accused Adams of psychological abuse and predatory behavior, which led to canceled performances and affected how some people viewed the band's history.
