White Kaps came out of the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s, led by a frontman who went by Captain Tony Thomas. Their first album, simply called "The White Kaps," came out in 1969. They were known for mixing psychedelic rock with blues and funk, though they're mostly remembered now for one song.
That song was "Hairy Mary," which appeared on their 1970 album "No More Pop." It got some radio play and landed in the Billboard Top 10. The band had other songs like "Girl In The Pit" and "Baby Bottle," but "Hairy Mary" was the one that stuck.
Their live shows had a reputation for being chaotic, and they ran into trouble with venues and the law at times. They kept putting out records through the early seventies, including "The Mighty White Kaps" in 1971 and "Sun God" in 1972, before calling it quits after 1973's "Goodbye to the Island."
