The Whitlams formed in Sydney in the early 1990s around singer and guitarist Tim Freedman. Their debut album 'Eternal Nightcap' came out in 1992, followed by 'Undeniably Yours' in 1995. That second album included what became their best-known song, '1995,' which connected with listeners who remembered that specific year. The band won an ARIA Award for Best Group in 1996.
Their songs often had a pop-rock feel with introspective lyrics. Tracks like 'God Drinks At The Sando (1997)' and 'High Ground' show their style. The lineup originally included Stevie Plunder on bass, Peter Donald on guitar, and Warwick Hornby on drums. After Plunder left, Josh Cunningham joined on bass.
They kept recording through the 2000s with albums like 'Torch the Moon' and 'Little Cloud.' Their most recent studio album was 'Sanctus' in 2016. Freedman's personal struggles sometimes drew attention away from the music, and there was a public dispute with Plunder in 2004 over allegations of bullying, which Freedman denied.
