Editor's note

Whitney Houston, the voice that defined a generation.

From gospel roots to pop stardom, her songs became the soundtrack for millions.

If you want to understand her impact, listen to 'I Will Always Love You' and 'Saving All My Love For You.' They frame everything else.

Whitney Houston's voice had a clarity and power that turned songs like 'I Will Always Love You' into cultural touchstones. Her version of that Dolly Parton tune for 'The Bodyguard' soundtrack is still the one most people hear in their heads. Early hits like 'Saving All My Love For You' showed she could deliver a ballad with real feeling, not just technical skill.

She started singing in church in New Jersey, then signed with Arista in 1983. Her self-titled debut came out in 1985, and the 1990s brought the massive success of 'The Bodyguard' and songs like 'Exhale (Shoop Shoop).' Her later years were marked by personal struggles before her death in 2012.

Whitney Houston was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1963. Her mother was gospel singer Cissy Houston, and Whitney grew up singing in church. She signed with Arista Records in 1983, and her self-titled debut album came out two years later. That record included 'Saving All My Love For You,' which became one of her early hits.

Her 1987 album 'Whitney' had 'I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me),' and she kept releasing music through the 1990s. The soundtrack for 'The Bodyguard' featured her version of 'I Will Always Love You,' a Dolly Parton song that became one of her most recognizable recordings. Other songs like 'I Have Nothing' and 'Exhale (Shoop Shoop)' also charted during that period.

Houston struggled with substance abuse in her later years. She died in Beverly Hills in 2012 at age 48. Her voice, with its clear power and range, made her one of the best-selling singers of her time.
