Wild Cherry formed in Cincinnati in 1971, with Robbie Robinson out front and the Spence brothers, Roosevelt Williams, and Ronald Wilson rounding out the lineup. They put out their self-titled debut album in 1976, and the single 'Play That Funky Music' took off from there.
That song, along with cuts like 'Baby Don't You Know' and 'Hold On To Your Hiney,' gave them a straightforward, groove-heavy sound that worked. They kept recording after that first album, but nothing else landed with quite the same force. By the end of the decade, as tastes shifted away from that style of funk, the band's run had largely wound down.
