Archive material and source history

Willy Alberti was born in Amsterdam in 1926 to a Jewish father and Catholic mother. He sang on the streets as a boy to help his family during difficult times, including the war years. His voice carried a particular emotional weight that connected with Dutch audiences.

In the postwar period, Alberti worked with accordionist Johnny Jordaan and guitarist Johnny Meijer in a trio simply called De Jordaan. They recorded songs like "Vaarwel, Ik Moet Je Verlaten" and "Aan de Voet Van Die Oude Wester," which became standards in the Dutch popular songbook. Alberti's delivery mixed something of traditional folk feeling with the phrasing of American jazz singers he'd heard.

He recorded steadily through the 1950s and 1960s, putting out albums like 'De Jordaan' in 1953 and collections of his songs in later decades. The material often dealt with separation and longing, themes that resonated in a country rebuilding after occupation. Alberti's personal life was complicated, marked by relationships that drew public attention and struggles with drinking that sometimes affected his work.

He kept performing into the 1980s, though his voice had roughened with time and use. Songs like "Alles Geef Ik Jou" and "Annie" remained in his setlists until his death in 1985.
