Background notes

Archive material and source history

Willy Bila was born in 1937 in what's now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He taught himself guitar and formed his first band in his early twenties, drawing from the rhythms around him.

He recorded albums like "Biloko Ya Moto" in 1967 and "Kin City" in 1982. The band's lineup shifted over time, but included musicians like bassist Michelino, drummer Dizzy Mandjeku, and saxophonist Ndombe alongside Bila on vocals and guitar.

In 1980 he released "Dia da Criança," a song about Children's Day that became his most lasting hit. Another track, "Hoje É o Dia," also appears among his notable songs. His music carried a certain warmth that connected with listeners, without needing to shout about it.
