Winans Phase 2

Winans Phase 2 formed in the late 1980s around brothers Carvin and Marvin Winans and their cousin Daniel 'Danny' Winans, Jr. They came from the well-known Winans family gospel tradition but took a different direction, mixing contemporary gospel with R&B and soul. Their debut album came out in 1993, simply titled 'Winans Phase 2,' and it included the song 'Always For You.'

That track 'Always For You' became their most recognized single, a straightforward gospel ballad about devotion. They followed it with other albums like 'We Got Next' and 'Power,' and songs such as 'Thank You Lord' and 'Let Him In' kept to their blend of smooth harmonies and accessible production. The group's sound was less about traditional choir arrangements and more about the kind of R&B-inflected vocal group style that could play on both gospel and urban radio.

By 2008, a legal dispute led to the group's dissolution. After that, Carvin, Marvin, and Danny each continued working on music separately. Their catalog, especially songs like 'Always For You' and 'I'm A Winans Too,' remains part of the modern gospel landscape from that late '90s and early 2000s period.
