Winds formed in Japan in 1989 with guitarist Masaki Okuda, vocalist Mika Nagai, bassist Ryo Fujitani, and drummer Kenichi Ito. Their debut single 'Sadistic Emotion' came out in 1991, and they followed it with the album 'Universal Creation Array' in 1993. That album's title track became one of their better-known pieces, along with songs like 'Beyond Fate' and 'Distorted Dimension'.
They kept releasing albums through the 1990s and early 2000s, including 'Of Distant Days' in 1994, 'Labyrinth' in 1996, and 'The Wind's Howling' in 2001. Their music mixed progressive rock with ambient textures, and Nagai's vocals gave it a particular atmosphere. The lyrics tended toward philosophical or cosmic themes, which some listeners found compelling and others thought were a bit much.
They didn't get huge mainstream attention in Japan during the early '90s, when heavier metal and pop were more dominant. But they stuck with their sound and kept putting out records. Their last album listed here is 'Evocation' from 2004.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
