Wolff Menezes came out of Salvador, Bahia, where he grew up hearing samba, reggae, and axé. He started playing guitar and singing early on, and by 2005 he had put together a band with bassist Alexandre Alves, drummer André Sao Paulo, and keyboardist Daniel Cabral. They called themselves Wolff Menezes and began mixing Brazilian rhythms with rock.
In 2007 they put out a song called "Ancorar" that caught on. It had a simple, memorable melody and lyrics about holding on through love and loss. The song did well on Brazilian radio and became the one people knew them by. They followed it with albums like "Nova Estação" in 2009 and "Pra Frente" in 2013.
There was some noise in 2012 when another artist claimed the band had copied parts of a song called "Praia dos Amores." The case didn't go anywhere, but it hung around for a while. They kept playing and recording anyway. Besides "Ancorar," you might know "Menina Brasília" or "Nuvens" from their setlists.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
