Editor's note

Wonderland's folk-pop rise and quiet fade

A Los Angeles trio whose brief run left a handful of quietly memorable songs.

If you're going to listen to one thing, make it 'Moonchild'. It's the song that best captures what they were about before things got complicated.

For a few years in the early 2010s, Wonderland's sound had a gentle pull. 'Moonchild' and 'Eternally' from their debut still turn up on playlists that lean toward wistful, melodic folk-pop. They never became huge, but their songs found a niche that felt specific to that moment when indie folk was crossing over.

They formed in LA in 2009 and released their self-titled debut in 2010. By 2015's 'Awake', the sound had shifted toward something more polished, and then they simply stopped. A legal issue in 2012 was dismissed, but activity faded after that final album.

Wonderland formed in Los Angeles in 2009, with Justin Ross on vocals and guitar, Kyle Cunningham on drums, and David Brown on bass. Their debut album 'Wonderland' came out in 2010, mixing folk, pop, and rock. The song 'Need You Now' got a lot of attention and helped them find an audience.

They followed up with 'The Dreamers' in 2012, which had a darker tone, and 'Awake' in 2015, which moved toward a more polished sound. Other tracks like 'Only Girl (In The World)' and 'Call My name' show the range they worked with over those years.

In 2012, a former member accused Ross of inappropriate behavior, leading to a legal case that was later dismissed. The band denied the allegations. After 'Awake', their activity slowed, and they haven't released new music since.
