Archive material and source history

Wynn Stewart was a country singer who had his biggest success in the mid-1960s. He signed with Capitol Records and released 'It's Such a Pretty World Today' in 1964, with the title track becoming a top-five hit. His follow-up single 'Another Day, Another Dollar' reached number two on the Billboard country charts. Songs like 'I Can Take It Or Leave It' and 'I'll Die Tryin'' show his straightforward approach to country storytelling.

He was born in Mount Olive, West Virginia in 1934 and served in the Korean War before starting his music career in 1958. His band included musicians like Curly Chalker on guitar and Hargus 'Pig' Robbins on bass. Stewart collaborated with other country artists including George Jones and Tammy Wynette.

Stewart's later years were difficult. He struggled with alcoholism and was arrested for cocaine possession in 1973, which led to a suspension from the Grand Ole Opry. He continued recording through the 1970s and early 1980s, with albums like 'Country Fever' and 'Feelin' Blue'.

He died in 1985 at age 51. In 2014, he was posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
