Archive material and source history
X Cite was a UK electronic dance trio formed in 1998 by Kurtis Chong, Sam Hogg, and Ian Emery. They came out of London's club scene and put out their debut single "Down Down" in 1999. The track had a simple, driving beat and a chant-like vocal that caught on in clubs and on radio.
"Down Down" became a chart hit in several countries, including the UK, Australia, and the US. The band's lineup had Chong on vocals, Hogg on keyboards and production, and Emery handling DJ and percussion duties.
They ran into some trademark issues around their name, which caused them to shift from "X-Cite" to "X Cite." Critics sometimes pointed out that their sound could be repetitive. After the early 2000s, they largely stepped back from recording and touring.
