X-Puh formed in Los Angeles in 1978 with Keith Morris on vocals, Dave Alvin on guitar, John Doe on bass, and Bill Bateman on drums. Their sound was raw and aggressive, a straightforward take on hardcore punk that found an audience in the city's underground scene. They recorded a debut album called 'Los Angeles' in 1980.

That album included 'D Generation X Who's Gonna Kick Your Ass,' a track that became a kind of standard for the genre. They put out a few more records, like 'Wild Gift' and 'Under the Big Black Sun,' before breaking up around 1984. Afterward, Morris worked with Black Flag and the Circle Jerks, Alvin went into folk and Americana as a solo artist, and Doe started acting in films.
