Xana came out of Rio de Janeiro with a song called "Manual de Sobrevivência" in 2016. The track became something of an anthem, with lyrics that addressed female empowerment and sexuality in fairly direct terms.
Giovana Ewbank fronts the band as lead vocalist, with Pedro Braun on guitar, Bruno Caliman on bass, and Felipe Novaes on drums. Their sound is energetic, driven by Novaes's beats and Braun's guitar work. They followed up with albums like "Não Custa Nada" in 2018 and "Tudo Nosso" in 2019, and another single, "Esta Es Mi Fiesta."
Ewbank's outspoken activism around LGBTQ+ rights also sparked debate. At a festival in 2017, protesters interrupted one of their performances, objecting to the band's message. They kept releasing music through 2021 with "Despertar," working in a space where their themes often polarized listeners as much as their music connected with them.
