Xano Cigano came from Freixo de Espada à Cinta and started playing guitar around age 16. His first album, "Olhó o Gato," came out in 1993, but it was the 1996 single "Sou Rico" that made him widely known in Portugal.
His songs like "Amo Te Demais" and "Mentirosa" often drew criticism for their explicit language and themes. Xano argued they reflected life in his hometown, and he kept recording despite the backlash. He put out albums including "Tudo ao Mato" in 1997 and "O Meu Sentimento" in 1999.
He worked with other Portuguese artists like Dulce Pontes and Mariza. His band originally included Jorge Palma on guitar, António Palma on bass, Manuel Rodrigues on percussion, and Rui Luís on drums, though the lineup changed over time.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
