Xerife formed in Évora, Portugal in 1987. Their debut album came out in 1996, sharing its name with the track 'Dá-me a Mão' that would become their most recognizable song. The band's sound mixed rock and funk with Portuguese melodic traditions.
Fernando Ribeiro handled vocals and guitar, with Rui Costa on bass, Pedro Silva on drums, and Luís Matias on guitar. They released albums like 'Morfina' in 2001, 'O Que É Que Tu Queres?' in 2004, and 'Não Acredito no Amanhã' in 2008. Other songs from their catalog include 'Mais Verdade,' 'Ter e Não Ter,' and 'Vidas-Anzol.'
Some critics found their approach too commercial at times, but they kept working with their blend of styles, later adding electronic touches. The band was inducted into the Portuguese Music Hall of Fame in 2017.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
