Editor's note

Xero, the early name that became Linkin Park

Before they were Linkin Park, this Columbus band laid the groundwork with raw demos.

For the Xero sound, listen to 'Piercing the Skin', it's all there in rough form. 'Soul Song' from their demo list has that early urgency too.

Xero matters because it's where Linkin Park began, Chester Bennington, Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, and Joe Hahn first played together under that name in Columbus in the early 2000s. Their early tracks like 'Piercing the Skin' already had that mix of rock and electronic textures. The legal issues over the Xero name forced the change to Linkin Park in 2002, but those demos show the sound taking shape.

Xero started in Columbus, Ohio around 2000 with Bennington, Shinoda, Delson, and Hahn. They recorded demos including 'Piercing the Skin' and 'Take U Down' before the name conflict led them to become Linkin Park in 2002. Their first album as Linkin Park, 'Hybrid Theory,' came out that same year.

Xero was a band that started in Columbus, Ohio in the early 2000s. They were originally formed by Chester Bennington, Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, and Joe Hahn. The group had to change their name to Linkin Park in 2002 due to legal issues with the Xero name.

Their debut album as Linkin Park, "Hybrid Theory," came out in 2000 and became one of the best-selling albums of all time. They followed it with "Meteora" in 2003, then put out several more albums including "Minutes to Midnight," "A Thousand Suns," and "Living Things."
