XG Say formed in Cape Town in 2017, a group of musicians drawn to African rhythms and experimental sounds. Their name comes from "Xhosa Gqom Say," nodding to their cultural roots and the gqom genre that informs their music. They put out their debut album "Xperience Gqom" in 2019.
In 2020, their song "Reto Cuarentena" drew attention for its lyrics about the COVID-19 pandemic. The band's lineup includes Zithulele "Zuluboy" Mthiyane on vocals and production, Mandisa "Lady X" Mbali on vocals and songwriting, Mxolisi "X-Quest" Mntambo on drums, Nkosinathi "K-Nine" Nkosi on bass, and Sakhile "DJ Ski" Sibiya on turntables.
They've released several albums since their debut, including "Uprising" in 2021 and "Freedom" in 2023.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
