A Recife band that kept going after Chico Science's death in 1997.
For a quick sense of their sound, try História Pra Ninar Gente Grande or Ei Hey. Both have that mix of rhythms and plainspoken lyrics about life in Brazil.
Xis mattered because they built something new from the ground up in Recife. Their early albums like Da Lama ao Caos and Afrociberdelia mixed Brazilian styles with punk and reggae in a way that felt local and urgent. Songs like História Pra Ninar Gente Grande and Ei Hey show how they wrote about everyday Brazilian life with that same rhythmic blend.
They formed in Recife in 1988 with Chico Science on vocals. After his death in 1997, Jorge Du Peixe took over vocals and the band kept recording, putting out albums like Nação Zumbi in 1998 and Semente do Mangue in 2015. They're still based there today with a lineup that includes original drummer Gilmar Bola 8.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
