Xöia Mai formed in 2005 when Ariel López (Xöia) and Ma. Eugenia Martínez (Mai) started working together. Their music pulls from traditional Mexican sounds and electronic production, though some listeners have questioned how they blend those elements. The band's 2007 debut album 'Arrieros Semus' gave them their first real attention, with the title track becoming a recognizable piece.
Beyond the core duo, the group has included drummer Juan Manuel Sánchez and bassist Gilberto Sandoval. They've released several albums after that first one, like 'Saga' in 2010, 'Suave el Suelo' in 2014, and 'Cantor' in 2019. Songs like 'El Canto de las Hadas' and 'La Danza de Shir' show their continued interest in layered, atmospheric arrangements.
Their sound isn't easy to categorize, and that has led to occasional debate about their approach to folk traditions. They've kept making music through those discussions, maintaining a fairly low public profile outside of their recordings.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
