Xotaê formed in Fortaleza, Ceará in 1997, with founding members Zé Cantor on vocals and accordion, Luizinho Duarte on guitar, and Jurandir da Luz on percussion. They worked with traditional forró rhythms but added electric guitars and modern percussion, which some purists initially resisted.
Their debut album 'Xotaê' came out in 2001 and included the song 'Longe de Você,' which became widely popular across Brazil. In 2007, they faced plagiarism accusations over a melody, but the legal dispute eventually resolved in their favor.
Later albums included 'Do Jeito Que Eu Gosto' in 2003, 'No Balanço do Forró' in 2005, and 'Boemia Forrozeira' in 2015. The band's lineup expanded to include Nailson on keyboards and Marcos Borborema on bass alongside the original members.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
