Xote & Raíz formed in Ceará, a northeastern Brazilian state, with founders Josué Ferreira and Luciano Souza. Their name combines 'xote,' a dance rhythm, with 'raíz,' meaning roots, pointing to their interest in traditional styles like xote, baião, and forró. They released their debut album in 2002.
Their 2006 album 'Casinha de Sapê' included the song 'Casinha de Sapê (Na Rua, Na Chuva, Na Fazenda),' which helped bring them wider attention. They followed with albums in 2010, 2014, and 2018, the last titled 'Filho do Sertão.'
The band's lineup has included Josué Ferreira on vocals, Luciano Souza on accordion and guitar, Nilton Ferreira on drums and percussion, and Ronaldo Silva on bass. Their music draws from northeastern Brazilian folk traditions.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
