Xtema formed in São Paulo in the early 2000s, a Brazilian group that mixed hip-hop, funk, and samba. Their name came from the X-rated films common in the favelas, a reference to the overlooked realities they often wrote about. The band was led by vocalist MC Tee, with DJ Nyack as another consistent member.
In 2005, they released their debut album "Cadê a Paz?" The title track became a hit, a ballad about wanting peace amid violence and poverty. The song's success brought them wider attention in Brazil.
Their lyrics sometimes drew criticism for being too direct about social issues, but they kept writing about inequality and life in marginalized communities. The lineup changed over time beyond the core members, with different artists coming and going.
Other albums include "Sangue Bom" from 2008, "Mundo Novo" in 2012, "É Tudo Nosso" in 2016, and "Resistência" in 2020.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
