Xtra Testosterone came out of Los Angeles in the early 2000s with Jake Rodriguez on vocals and guitar, Mike Martinez on bass, and Chris Morales on drums. They put out their first album, "Bass Up Treble Down," in 2003. Their live shows were loud and physical, built around a heavy rhythm section and Rodriguez's shouting delivery.
Their music mixed rock, punk, and metal, with Martinez's basslines driving most of the songs. The lyrics had a rowdy, sometimes humorous tone, though they also touched on social issues. The band faced criticism for some of their content and for the chaotic energy of their performances, but they kept playing the way they wanted.
They released three more albums after the first one: "Louder Than Thunder" in 2005, "Fist of Fury" in 2007, and "Last Call" in 2009. Rodriguez, Martinez, and Morales stayed together as the lineup. Rodriguez died in 2012.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
