Y-O-U formed in Toronto around 2001 when Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw met and started playing together. They brought in Heather Park on bass and Rob Baker on drums to round out the quartet. Their debut album was called 'Habitual Love Songs,' and they followed it with records like 'Miss Universe' and 'Stay Gold.'
A song called 'Going Down Swinging' became their breakout single. It's one of those tracks people remember, along with others like 'Ten Sharp' and 'Alright, Alright, Alright.' The band kept touring and putting out music after that.
They've had a steady presence without much of the dramatic rise-and-fall narrative that sometimes gets attached to bands. Their sound has always been a bit hard to pin down to one genre, which seems to have suited them fine.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
