Yamamoto Joji formed his band Yamamoto Joji & The Big Band in 1984. Their 1987 single 'Hana Mo Arashi Mo' became a national hit, mixing rock and pop with some traditional Japanese elements. The group had a revolving lineup that included guitarist Tatsuya Shimogaki, bassist Hirohide Takeda, and drummer Masao Fujioka at various points.
They released albums like 'Nadare no Yo ni' in 1989 and 'Cosmic Symphony' in 1996, moving between harder rock and more experimental electronic sounds. Songs like 'Michinoku Hitoritabi' and 'OirassĂȘ' show the range they worked in. Joji disbanded the Big Band in 2000 and continued as a solo artist.
His lyrics sometimes touched on social themes and personal struggle, which drew some criticism. The band's stage shows were known for being flamboyant. They collaborated with artists including Kazuhiko Kato and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
