Yan Ren Zhong formed in Beijing in 2009. Their name translates to 'the sound of people,' which they've said reflects wanting to connect with ordinary experience through music. The band includes vocalist and guitarist Yu Wenwen, bassist Zhang Yadong, drummer Wang Xiaosong, and keyboardist Xu Wei.
Their sound pulls from traditional Chinese folk music alongside Western pop and rock. The song 'I Can Only Leave' became particularly well-known, though in 2015 it drew accusations of plagiarism from another artist. The band denied this, saying their inspiration came from traditional melodies.
They've released albums like 'The Sound of People' in 2010, 'The Second Chapter' in 2012, and 'The Time of Day' in 2015. Their lyrics tend to work through themes of love, loss, and everyday life.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
