Yanagida Kumiko formed in Tokyo in 2002, originally with Kumiko Yanagida on vocals and guitar, Masumi Gotanda on bass, and Takayuki Kuroda on drums. Over time, Yanagida became the only constant member, with the lineup shifting to include Takumi Shimada on bass and Toru Takahashi on drums. They've put out albums like Yotsuba-no-Clover in 2003, Aozora in 2005, and Himawari in 2015.
Their sound pulls from folk, electronica, and traditional Japanese music, which hasn't always been an easy fit. In 2012, the album Anata to Watashi to no Sekai drew strong reactions for its themes of love and loss, with some finding it raw and others too melancholic. Songs like "Vui Anbu" and "12wol (December)" show that mix of quiet reflection and layered arrangements.
They've kept releasing music through the 2010s with albums like Sakura in 2018, and their work has found listeners who respond to its emotional weight. It's music that doesn't try to be anything other than what it is, which has given it a quiet staying power in Japan's independent scene.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
