Yanapakuna formed around singer-songwriter Ramiro Choquehuanca, who came from the Andean village of Tarabuco. The band's core included Ramiro on vocals and guitar, along with Elmer Choquehuanca on bass and Mario Choquehuanca on percussion. They sometimes worked with other musicians like charango player Eddy Navia.
Their debut album "Agua y Arena" brought them wider attention, and they performed with artists including Inti-Illimani, Mercedes Sosa, and Joan Manuel Serrat. Their songs often dealt with themes affecting indigenous communities.
Beyond "Agua y Arena," they recorded other albums like "Apu Inti" and "Taki Wayra." Their music drew from Andean traditions while incorporating contemporary elements.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
