Yard Act formed in Leeds around 2019, led by vocalist James Smith. Their debut single 'Fixer Upper' came out that year, and they put out their first album, 'The Overload', in 2022. The title track from that record became a notable song for them.
The band includes Sam Shjipstone on guitar, Ryan Needham on bass, and George Townend on drums. Smith writes most of the material, delivering lyrics with a sharp, observational tone over post-punk arrangements.
Like many acts, they had to cancel shows during the pandemic, but kept working on music. Their album received a Mercury Prize nomination, and some discussion about whether their view of modern life was too bleak or just honest.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
