Yari Mejia formed in Medellín, Colombia around 2006, with vocalist Yari Mejia at the center alongside guitarist Omar Castrillón and percussionist Daniel Salazar. Their sound pulls from Colombian rhythms while working in pop and electronic elements.
In 2011, their album 'Mexa' gave them a wider audience. The title track became a recognizable piece, mixing vallenato with dance music.
Around 2015, they faced criticism over a music video that some saw as cultural appropriation, involving indigenous dancers in traditional dress. The band kept working after that, continuing to draw from Colombian sources for their material.
