Yasuko Agawa was born in Japan and raised in Brazil. In her early twenties, she moved to Rio de Janeiro. In 1965, Brazilian composer Vinicius de Moraes invited her to perform at a concert after hearing her sing.
At that concert, her rendition of "Meu Amor" became a hit. The song established her as a singer working between Japanese and Brazilian musical traditions. She released her debut album "Yasuko" in 1965, followed by "Meu Amor" in 1967.
As a Japanese artist singing in Portuguese, she faced some criticism.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
