Yeats formed in Dublin with Shane MacGowan on vocals and guitar, Nick Seymour on bass, and Fergal Sharkey on drums. They played alternative rock with anthemic melodies and introspective lyrics. Their song "Everything's All Right" shows that side of their work.
MacGowan wrote most of the lyrics, which tended to focus on love and loss. Seymour's bass lines gave the songs their rhythmic foundation, while Sharkey's drumming added a raw energy to their sound. The band developed a following for that combination of elements.
As they became more popular, Yeats faced increased public scrutiny. MacGowan had well-documented struggles with addiction during this period, which affected the band's stability and eventually contributed to their dissolution.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
